After BTech: Start working or study further?

After BTech: Start working or study further?

You decide one fine morning during your fifth semester that you are going to do MS in US after engineering and start preparing for GRE. After a few days you see some of your friends preparing for the M.Tech entrance exam – Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Now you decide to the idea of GRE and start preparing for GATE. Never do this. It may not take you anywhere and finally you may end up losing a year or so, after engineering due to your indecision.
If you plan to do higher studies after engineering, there are ample opportunities available in India and abroad. In India you need to write GATE to be eligible to do higher studies. If you want to do your M.Tech in premier institutes like IISc or IITs then you need to at least get a rank lower than 500. If you want to do higher studies in the US then you need to write two exams, Graduate Records Exam (GRE) and TOEFL, and then have to apply to the Universities in the US which is a comprehensive process.
A student joining engineering must understand that there are so many areas of specialisation available for each branch of engineering. If you major in Mechanical Engineering you can choose to specialise in thermal engineering, machine design, manufacturing, industrial engineering or aerospace engineering etc. Similarly if you have a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering you can specialise in Structural Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering or Environmental Engineering or Water Resource Engineering or Construction Management or Sustainable Engineering and so many other fields. This is true with any branch of engineering.

If you aim for a job in the private sector after your engineering your best bet will be campus placement. Know the selection process of the companies that may potentially come for campus placement by the sixth semester and start preparing so that you can easily get recruited in the company of your choice. There are two kinds of companies that come to campus for recruitment – core companies that hire students only from a particular branch of engineering and others (mostly software companies) that allow all the graduating students to appear for the selection process.

So there are ample opportunities available for engineering graduates. The key is selecting a rourse that you love or loving the course you select, and knowing the various possibilities each branch has to offer. Decide by the third year of engineering what you want to do after engineering and work towards achieving that goal. If you do all these things judiciously then you are sure to land up in a good position after your engineering.

Days just goes on!!

Days just passing on and its already one month in Singapore now...Classes going on its schedule..its nice experience to see my self as Student again after 5 years of busy worklife at india... :) However would feel still there is so much work to do like Courseworks,Revisions etc...Foreign degrees obviously follows the Practical oriented study system where we can't copy word to word in our courseworks , this is to enable the student to study the books and do the research on his own and have to prepare the coursework.Word to word copying is not allowed from any books /online..Which in other way named as Plagarism and its not allowed as per the University policy it is considered as indisciplinary actions ,I will post more this part in my future posts.

Its So colouring outside especially during nights :)..if you are a Party guy its nice place to hang around... But Climate really sucks...unlike Bangalore, where we enjoy awesome climate..Singapore sits almost on the equator and enjoys a tropical climate. Temperatures are hot and humidity is high all year round with no distinct rainy season. Despite this the time between November and January has marginally more rainfall and humidity all the time....so visitors might want to avoid this time.

90% of Attendance is Mandatory and No Excuses.

Most of the Private and Government institutes follows the same as I mentioned below.

Law is very strict and every where there would be rules apply and everybody follows the guidelines given by the University very religiously here as there will not be any kind of excuses entertained and rules are rules. Inorder to sit for Term exams you need to have atleast 90% of attendance in every module. The education is quite practical here unlike india and everyday u would be having 3-4 hrs of class and 2-3 hrs of Study skills class and that too 3-4 days per week.Rest of the time student can spend the time on Assignments and other coursework.logically saying you will not be having enough time as you would became quite busy in managing all the things and foreign studies are completely different when u compared with Indian teaching style.

Avg Living costs estimation sheet for basic living in Singapore.

Everything is money in Singapore.Living is More expensive here in Singapore and that too Indian food you may find little expensive than any available foods in Singapore. Most of the cuisines were of Chinese and Malay style and if you Vegetarian then it would be difficult for you to manage to eat in Restaurant. if you able to cook then you can save some money in Food expenses and most of the student hostels have electric cookers, however utensils you need to get on your own and permises has to be maintained clean. Most of the hostels follows this policy.

After researching and taking inputs from some of my Indian friends here ,I would say this would be the Above avg expenses for the basic living in Singapore.

Accommodation (shared): 400$-500$(4 -sharing in hostel) ; 300$-400$(6 to 8 - sharing in apartment ,this includes PUB.ie electricity and water bills)
Utilities: if you stay in hostel, they will take care, if its apartment person has to be taken care and it will be around 50$ to 60$ depending on members of room.
Food cost in Singapore:450-500$ per month taken 15$ of 5$ each meal for 30 days , if u eat outside, even if you prepare can save max 200$ which comes to 300$ nearly.
Public transport: min 5-8 kms distance guy Travelling thru MRTS takes 60$ for up and down and max can put 100$ for public transport per month.
Telephone: again based on usage, can have 50-80$ if he uses quite min and manage to dial india thru calling cards which comes at 200mins free for india at 2$ for 3months and same way you get 10$ cards for 500mins free for india.
Books & Stationary: no idea as of now. i would say 30-40$ per month, as course material and library is there in univ.
Misc: 100$ if you are clubbing guy and does shopping.
Medical Insurance: no need to worry as univ fees includes this.

My Orientation day - 28th OCT'11

Today is the officially first day I stepped in to the University and it is just awesome and cant be able to explain in words. The representative greeted us and took us to the Orientation class and explained about the University, its history, award and what exactly the Univ gives at the end of the year and How we have to study and do the course work and assignments and finally rules and regulations, class schedules and followed by the tasty lunch.

All the representatives are very friendly, resolved our queries and I got to meet my buddies.. so called my class mates who came from China,Myanmar,Korea,India,Indonesia and Srilanka. We had a nice talk all over the orientation class sharing our introduction, career background and the officer took us to the Singapore city tour.

The Officer divided the Students into 5 groups irrespective of Nationalities for better interaction. We had a good time allover the city tour..like we had a photo sesssion, we were taken thru the Singapore Business hub,City hall,Marina Bay Sands,Golf court and City Central library ..ie National Library of Singapore which is such a huge 16 storeyed building which has books of all kinds in different levels .

Finally we were taken back to the University thru same buses and we had played some indoor games and officer distributed the class schedules and asked us to come on Monday again to collect the Course material.

Overall its a Nice experience today to cherish all over the life.Singapore is such nice place and you really fall in love with it... thtz it for the day!!..

Some information about Singapore

Singapore is such a nice city where you can explore around whole day and night and you will not feel tired and always feel excited to see around more.Singapore has four official languages: English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil.English is the first language of the nation and is the language of business, government and medium of instruction in schools.Around 0.1 million or 3% of Singaporeans speak Tamil as their home language.Even though only Tamil has official status, there have been no attempts to discourage the use or spread of other Indian languages.
Some 5 million people live in Singapore, of whom 2.91 million were born locally. Most are of Chinese, Malay or Indian descent. There are four official languages: English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil. Foreigners also make up 42% of the population and have a strong influence on Singaporean culture.

Dining, along with shopping, is said to be the country's national pastime. The diversity of food is touted as a reason to visit the country, and the variety of food representing different ethnicities is seen by the government as a symbol of its multiculturalism. The "national fruit" of Singapore is the Durian In popular culture, food items belong to a particular ethnicity, with Chinese, Indian, and Malay food clearly defined. The diversity of cuisine has been increased further by the "hybridization" of different styles, e.g. the Peranakan style, a mix of Chinese and Malay cuisine.

Popular sports include football, basketball, cricket, swimming, sailing, table tennis and badminton. Most Singaporeans live in public residential areas near amenities such as public swimming pools, outdoor basketball courts and indoor sport complexes. Water sports are popular, including sailing, kayaking and water skiing. Scuba diving is another popular recreational sport.

My Dream came true

To Introduce myself,Iam Satish babu have around 5 years of experiences working for CSC and IBM.My intrest towards Management degree made me to apply for and finally I reached to Singapore on 21st OCT'11.I got an offer to study at Auston institute of Management which is under Coventry university,UK.

its been 5 days now in  Singapore. All are roads are Quite clean and Law is followed very strictly here by everyone.we freaked around some of the nearby places across the Singapore like Little india,China town,Marina bay,City hall etc.My experience so far is very good and people here were very friendly and I met some of my indian friends. We all took the hostel which is 20-30mins walkable from the university.;On 24th we went to university and student recruitment manager greeted us and explained about class schedules and asked us to come again on 28th for the orientation and site seeing.

Singapore is the place where for everyplace you will be having MRT(Railway station connected to your place).if you want to go from A place to B place, just we need to find the nearest MRT connected to that A place and travel to the nearest MRT connected to that B place.
